Description

Here's a Spec taxon you will never see in the Speculative Dinosaur Project, at least in this particular form: the jackalopes, also known as struthiopods. I thought them up in 2004 when there was need for a prey species for the fleet-footed errosaurs of the Americas and the cheetaur in the Old World. The basic concept was a group of small ornithopods perfectly adapted to high-speed running, sort of dinosaurian gazelles. Their arms have been reduced to tiny stumps and legs resemble those of large ratites (in the Old World jackalopes at least). They never got posted on the Spec website as far as I can remember, because reasons.

The species represented here are struthiodactylids, found in the arid and semi-arid tropics of Africa and Asia. The top one is the Arabian jackalope, the heads belong to the axehead jackalope, pharaoh jackalope and the golden jackalope.

As for why you won't see them in Spec if the powers that be have any sense in them: they aren't fluffy. After Tianyulong and the next big feather bomb headed our way (no, I don't know anything else beyond that it's coming) I have no idea what they will become, but I can promise you there will be fluff.

Ooooh, so that's how they look/are! I remember reading that the Cheetaur hunted them, but without an image of them I was left clueless!
